Back in March 04 we had the idea of building project 'MXC'.
Starting with a standard Honda CRF50, the idea was to upgrade various
parts on the bike over the next six months to make the ultimate machine
suitable for an adult to ride and abuse using products sold on motox-collect.com.
At the time we thought it would be a great idea, but in reality with
the Xsports, Atomics, Thumpstars etc, being really good value, only
the hardcore minibiker would actually go about upgrading a CRF50.
Now with Honda slashing the prices of the CRF50 to almost half the
price of two years ago and some good 2nd hand deals to be had, the
project is alive again! |

OK, here she is.... our Honda XR50 donor bike, a bargain at below
£400 from Ebay!
No plastics or seat, but that's cool as they would have been changed
anyway.....

Stage 1 Upgrades/Adult
Proof
OK, so we need to get the bike 'adult proof'
so footpegs+footpeg mount, bars, extended gear shifter, upgraded
rear shock spring and a tall seat foam+gripper seat cover are the
esentials, all produced by Red Baron. The bar kit also includes,
top clamp, billet throttle, extended cables and kill switch. A Uni
performance air filter is also put on for good measure.
A fork extender kit would also be a good upgrade at this stage,
but on this build we are exchanging the forks altogether in Stage
3.

Stage 2 Upgrades/Cosmetics
Now the bike is 'adult proof', it's time
to add some bling, so first on the list some Team AHP Graphics,
AHP Dress-up Kit, Boyesen Ignition Cover, Sano Skid Plate and Fro
Systems Billet Fuel Cap.

mods have been done to make the bike adult proof, the cosmetic stuff
makes it look the business, now for the big mods, frame, swinger,
forks, shock, wheels.....

Stage 4 Engine/Control Tweaks
So the bikes looks pretty sorted, I'm keeping
the engine stock 50cc at the moment so just a few tweaks to get
the best out of her. It's already got an upgraded Uni Filter, so
just a few little enhancements....

Stage 5 (Engine)
The little fiddy was fun, but big engines
seem to be very popular at the moment, with some import engines
now 150cc+. I still wanted to keep mine on the smaller side, so
opted for an 88cc Kit but with race head/cam, billet clutch and
oil cooler, all thanks to Honda Trial Bikes.
